Kudos Joe on a very good summary of Social Media basics. However, for those just starting out, I would move listening to the #1 position. Too many businesses jump into social media without first understanding best practices. So spend some quality time reading blogs, Tweets, and conversations in LinkedIn that are relevant to your business. Follow people who really seem to"get it" and analyze what makes their blog, Tweets or conversations tick. Then model that behavior in your own work.
